MYTHS & FACTS ABOUT CHABAD

What do you know about Chabad? Myth or fact?

You might be surprised!

MYTH:

Chabad is only for religious Jews. You have to be “Orthodox” to participate in Chabad programs.

FACT:

Chabad is welcoming, inclusive, and nonjudgmental. Our programs are open to Jews of all backgrounds, including those with little or no prior Jewish involvement. In fact, many people who participate in Chabad programs do not identify as Orthodox.

Chabad’s teachings are infused with the warmth, joy, and spirit of Chassidic Judaism. However, living an Orthodox or Chassidic lifestyle is not a prerequisite for participating in Chabad activities. Everyone is welcome to learn, explore, and connect with their Jewish heritage at their own pace. In many ways, you might even find Chabad quite unorthodox!

MYTH:

Chabad is only for nonreligious Jews. I’m already involved in Jewish life.

FACT:

Chabad is here for every Jew, from those just beginning to explore their Jewish identity to those who are fully observant and deeply immersed in Jewish life.

We all need inspiration, joy, and enthusiasm in our lives. The teachings of Chabad offer meaningful insights and spiritual inspiration to Jews at every stage of their journey, regardless of their level of religious observance or involvement.

MYTH:

Chabad’s goal is to make me Orthodox, Chassidic, or “Chabad.”

FACT:

Chabad’s mission is to connect every Jew with their heritage and provide opportunities to grow in Jewish knowledge, appreciation, and practice.

We invite you to explore the richness of Jewish religion, tradition, and spirituality in a warm, open, and nonjudgmental atmosphere. Our classes, programs, and services offer valuable insights into Jewish history, traditions, laws, rituals, and religious practice.

Everyone is welcome to participate, ask questions, study, and learn. We believe that every connection with Judaism is meaningful, and we encourage each person to discover and deepen their relationship with their heritage at their own pace.

MYTH:

Chabad does not consider Reform, Conservative, or nonpracticing Jews to be “real” Jews.

FACT:

What?! Nothing could be further from the truth!

At Chabad, a Jew is a Jew is a Jew! We believe that every Jew has an intrinsic connection to their Jewish heritage, regardless of affiliation, background, or level of observance. We strive to bring Jews together rather than allow labels to divide us.

According to traditional Jewish law (Halacha), Jewish status is determined by being born to a Jewish mother or converting in accordance with Halacha. This status is independent of one's denomination, religious affiliation, or level of observance.

MYTH:

Chabad does not support the State of Israel.

FACT:

Chabad-Lubavitch has a longstanding connection to the Land and people of Israel and strongly supports the safety, security, and well-being of the Jewish people living there.

For centuries, Chabad has maintained a presence in the Holy Land. Kollel Chabad, one of Israel's oldest charitable organizations, was established by the Alter Rebbe, the founder of Chabad-Lubavitch, in 1788.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe consistently emphasized the importance of Israel's security and the protection of its people. Chabad communities throughout Israel provide practical and spiritual support to soldiers, assist families affected by terrorism and conflict, and strengthen Jewish life through educational programs and mitzvah campaigns.

Chabad's connection to Israel is expressed not only through its institutions and communities, but also through its commitment to the welfare of the Jewish people and the unity of Jews everywhere.

MYTH:

Chabad is financed by its international headquarters in New York.

FACT:

Each local Chabad center is financially independent and responsible for raising the funds needed to support its programs and activities.

Chabad of Maricopa is no exception. Our programs, events, educational activities, and community services are made possible through the generosity of local supporters and friends who believe in building a vibrant Jewish community.
